It was heartening to read Nelsy Rodriguez’s Oct. 12 article titled “MURRIETA: No dinners, parties for commissioners” in which Rodriguez reported that the City Council decided the timing is wrong for pricey events. Today’s tough economic climate compels the council to rein in the money spent on activities that are more about perks than about the city. This is the political reality.

When Californians vote in the May 19 special election, the state budget will hang in the balance.

That fragile compromise Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger crafted with Democratic lawmakers and a handful of legislators from his own party a couple of months ago didn’t erase all the $40 billion of red ink that threatened to shut down Sacramento.
