In February, Springfield voters will decide if businesses must use the federal E-Verify database to check whether potential employees can work legally in the United States.  Now, we know what voters will read on the ballot for the controversial proposed ordinance. With a deadline of Tuesday to get it on the February ballot, council members voted and passed one version of the ballot language for the E-Verify issue.  They had three possible versions of ballot language to consider.  The council decided, at the advice of legal counsel, that the first version was not a good choice because of a legal issue with the language involving who would collect fines.

Packing into a theater to see the latest big screen flick is a teenage rite of passage.  Plenty of popcorn and soda is at the service counter but there’s also something strictly for adults: alcohol.  For some, though, the combination of liquor and kids in such a close proximity is too much. “We think it just sends the wrong message,” said Greene County Prosecuting Attorney Darrell Moore.

Springfield city council will begin the process Thursday of deciding if they will ask voters to approve a sales tax increase to fund the police and firefighters pension fund. Members of the citizen task force presented their recommendations to council members at Monday’s city council meeting.  Their recommendation is that city council should ask voters to increase the sales tax by 5/8 or 3/4 percent and police and firefighters should increase their contributions by up to 2%.
