Initiative Process Could Have Moved Alaska’s Capitol

Alaska may be one of the most remote places on earth, and be nowhere near the United States mainland, but it still has the initiative process. alaska

Here’s a bit of interesting I&R trivia for you.  In the 1970s the citizens of Alaska tried to turn their state legislature from a bicameral to a unicameral body.  The state of Nebraska also has this setup in its state legislature.  However, for the change to occur it required a constitutional amendment which isn’t part of initiative & referendum law in Alaska.  This allowed the state legislature to just ignore the measure even though the people approved it.

In this case the Legislature did the people a favor: Nebraska’s unicameral is a disaster.
