Krist Novoselic on Freedom of Association in Washington State

As Citizens in Charge Foundation President Paul Jacob discussed in one of his Common Sense columns some time back, former Nirvana grunge rocker Krist Novoselic is challenging Washington state’s “top-two” primary system. Under the system, which was created by a voter-approved ballot initiative in 2005, the top two vote getters in the primary election can choose any party they like for the general election.
Novoselic points out in his latest Seattle Times column how the law harms freedom of association by allowing anyone to use the name of a political party without the party’s permission. Along the way, he makes a good point about grassroots activism and giving voters a voice.
