Texas: Recall Election Date Set for April 14th

After months of debate, the city’s recall election date is still on the calendar for April 14th and it could cost the city up to $1.37 million.

“Let the games begin,” Mayor John Cook said.

The opposing sides of the upcoming recall election have one thing in common.

“I’m gratified. That should have been a date established a long time ago,” Pastor Tom Brown said.

They’re both ready to get the recall election over with, but while city leaders voted to hold the election on April 14th, no one can be sure that will happen because the state hasn’t set dates for our primary elections.

Read more at News Channel 9 El Paso.

Texas: Citizens work to get term limits on ballot

The City of Big Spring shot down imposing term limits back in January after the League of United Latin American Citizens came out against them. Now, voters may have a chance to weigh in. A concerned citizens group has been passing around a petition to put it on the ballot. NewsWest 9 was there when the Concerned Citizens of Big Spring turned in their petitions Monday afternoon. “The change is that we are limiting councilmen, councilwomen any one elected Mayor, no more than two terms in their present office. After two terms they have to sit out for two terms,” Steven Campbell said.

Read the story from News West 9

Texas: Petitions against council rejected

Rejection essentially equaled an initial victory Tuesday in one grass-roots group’s ongoing fight against Amarillo City Hall. The Amarillo City Commission unanimously rejected petition demands submitted by Amarillo Citizens for Property Rights, sending the fledgling political action committee’s issues straight to voters in the May municipal election.

Read the story from the Amarillo Globe News

Texas: Domestic partnership vote still possible

The battle over domestic partner benefits will not go back to the voters as of Tuesday, but that could change between now and the May 14 election. The El Paso City Council hoped to clear up confusion over the election results on the issue from last November. On Tuesday, council members were looking for a way to clarify what voters really want.

Read the story from FOX 14

Houston Red Light Camera Battle - Company Tells Voters to Stuff It: City, Activists Fights Back

“We stand today to defend the integrity of the election process in America.”

Those were the words of an attorney representing activists leading the fight against red light cameras in Houston, TX - America’s fourth largest city. Last month city voters moved 53% in favor of banning the cameras and they were turned off just over a week later. Now playing the part of sore loser, camera provider American Traffic Solutions (ATS) is suing the city, claiming that voters didn’t have the right to weigh in on the matter.

As you may recall, Brandon Holmes and I traveled to Big Spring at the beginning of this year after citizen rights were violated by the city council.

It seems that the citizens of Big Spring are continuing their push for initiative and referendum rights:

Texas: Concerned citizens working to bring issues before voters

Midland isn’t the only West Texas town calling for new term limits. The City Charter Committee in Big Spring will meet on Tuesday night to discuss the limits and initiative referendum. The committee will vote on recommendations for these issues. If they are approved by the city, then Big Spring voters will get the final say in next years elections.

Read the story from News West 9

Texas: City support for red-light cameras wanes

Democrats were not the only losers on Election Day. Traffic cameras designed to catch red-light runners also took a ballot box beating as they were voted down in Houston and at least four other cities nationwide. More than 50 Texas communities have installed the cameras since 2003, when Garland became the state’s first city to do so. But growing opposition, buttressed by the same brand of anti-government ire that propelled the tea party this fall, has cast an uncertain future on the cameras.

Read the story from The Dallas Morning News

Red Light Cameras Routed at Ballot Box - Including in America's 4th Largest City

After blogging yesterday about traffic enforcement cameras in Ohio, a reader pointed me to this excellent breakdown of red-light and speed camera votes around the country from TheNewspaper.com. According to the article, the cameras have never survived a public vote: they usually lose by margins of two-to-one.

Among the five additional communities to ban cameras is Houston, Texas - America’s fourth largest city:

Texas: City council looks to invalidate voter approved initiative

El Paso City Council has instructed city staff to include an item on next week’s agenda that would repeal the initiative passed by voters that took away benefits from gay and unmarried partners. This directive was made after the city found an additional 200 people would lose benefits on top of the 19 domestic partners who already signed up for health insurance. Last year, City Council approved the domestic partners policy, extending health benefits to domestic partners of city employees.

Read the story from KVIA 7

Texas: OK given by voters for taxes

In the months of campaigning before the Nov. 2 elections, Republican candidates at the state and local level were unified in their campaign message they delivered in TV ads and stump speeches: a vote for the GOP was a vote for belt-tightening, back-to-the basics fiscal conservatism. County politics, by its nature less partisan and more inclined to workaday issues like road building and jail maintenance, followed a similar script of economic frugality.

Read the story from the Hays Free Press

Texas: Police group comes out against domestic benefits initiative

The El Paso Municipal Police Officers Association has taken a stand against a ballot initiative that would rescind health benefits for unmarried and gay partners of city employees. The proposed ordinance has been placed on the ballot by a local religious group. The police association is not against the ordinance for moral or religious reasons. The organization just wants to make sure retirees continue getting health insurance - something they’re concerned might not happen if the ordinance passes.

Read the story from KVIA 7

Texas: Information sessions launched by group on ballot measures

With the city’s alcohol election only five weeks away, an Oak Cliff group is launching an information initiative about the two ballot measures. Dallas voters will decide Nov. 2 whether to allow the sale of beer and wine in stores citywide and whether to eliminate the “private club” rule for restaurants, as in let them sell alcoholic beverages without that silly and costly membership card requirement.

Read the story from The Dallas Morning News

New Developments in Big Spring, TX

Earlier this year, Brandon Holmes and I traveled to Big Spring, TX to talk with folks there whose citizen rights were being violated.
Texas: City mayor considering initiative & referendum

The Big Spring City Council Tuesday approved Mayor Tommy Duncan’s recommendation to form a special committee to look at city council term limits, as well as “initiative and referendum”. Mayor Duncan is suggesting two, three year terms as the limit for a person to serve on city council. Initiative and referendum, says Duncan, would offer voters more opportunity to affect decisions on larger projects in the future, whether it be to promote a project concept, or to repeal something already put in place by a city council.

Texas: Suit over redlight cameras

Boosters of Houston’s 70 red-light cameras are seeking to prevent a November vote on whether to ban the devices, alleging in a federal lawsuit that the initiative was placed on the ballot illegally and that it could violate the Voting Rights Act. The proposal, which City Council voted to put on the ballot last month, did not follow guidelines in the city charter that require those seeking repeal of a law through referendum to challenge it within 30 days of the law’s passage, the suit says. Texas Democrats have accused Republicans of paying to help the Green Party get on the ballot to pull liberal votes away from Bill White, the Democratic candidate for governor who is challenging Republican Rick Perry.
