The opponents of a marijuana cultivation ordinance passed by the Board of Supervisors last month have submitted signatures for a referendum to stop the new measure from taking effect.

The coalition of marijuana advocates making up the Emerald Unity Coalition and the Community Alliance to Ban Illegal Cannabis Cultivation submitted the signatures to the Lake County Registrar of Voters Office on Wednesday afternoon, a day before the county ordinance was to have taken effect.

Registrar of Voters Diane Fridley said the raw count of signatures submitted totaled 4,222.

Safety versus personal freedom, tradition as opposed to increasing concerns about fire. Those are some of the issues cited by those for, and against, Measure C, appearing on the ballot for this November’s election in Lakeport. Measure C would restore the ability for several local nonprofit groups to sell fireworks within Lakeport’s city limits from July 1 through July 4 of each year.

A ballot initiative that would put a vote on allowing safe and sane fireworks in the city before residents is on the Lakeport City Council agenda this Tuesday. The council will hold a budget workshop with staff beginning at 4 p.m., with the regular council meeting to begin at 6 p.m. at Lakeport City Hall, 225 Park St. The fireworks initiative effort began after the council voted 3-2 this spring to ban safe and sane fireworks in the city, as Lake County News has reported.

Following a brief discussion, the Lakeport City Council on Tuesday took its final vote on an ordinance to ban state-approved fireworks in the city limits.

In the face of what appeared to be a foregone conclusion, opponents of the action put the council on notice of their intention to move forward with a ballot measure this fall.
