“Local Ballot Initiatives” Booklet Helps Activists

Late last year, the Lucy Burns Institute published a booklet entitled, “Local Ballot Initiatives,” written by Leslie Graves, president of the institute and executive director of the wiki-based website Ballotpedia.org, to educate citizens on how they can use initiatives and referendums to reform their hometown governments.

Through several articles, recollections by activists (including Citizens in Charge President Paul Jacob) and real-world examples, Graves outlines how the petition process works and how it is beneficial to initiating change at the local level.

Federal Court: First Amendment Applies to Michigan Recall Petitions Too

United States District Court Judge Robert Holmes Bell has made Michigan the ninth state to see a requirement that campaign workers who circulate petitions be residents of the state struck down. In 2008 federal appeals courts struck down residency requirements in Ohio, Arizona and Oklahoma. Residency requirements of some kind have previously been ruled unconstitutional in California, Colorado, Wisconsin, Illinois, and New York.

This Is What It Is All About

I ran across this opinion piece in The Bismarck Tribune this morning and wanted to share it here. It’s a short but great piece that talks about the usefullness and success of an open & accessible ballot initiative process in the state of North Dakota. The author’s closing statement is particularly good:
