Arizona: Vote NO on Prop 112: Give Citizens the Time to Petition

Tue, Oct 26 2010 by Staff

Citizens in Charge takes no position whatsoever on ballot measures - either from the people or the legislature - unless they relate to the initiative or referendum process. This November one of those initiatives is Arizona Proposition 112.

Prop. 112 was placed on the ballot by the Arizona legislature and will amend the state constitution to require signatures be turned in six months before the election in which the measure will appear on the ballot. Currently the deadline is four months. This not only reduces the time citizens have to petition, but it takes away critical summer months in which many signatures are collected.

Supporters argue that under the current system there is not enough time to verify petitions and present legal challenges. However, rather than reduce citizen petition rights with Prop. 112, Arizona should work to increase resources for verification and streamline the challenge process so that citizens still have ample time while ballot integrity is insured.

If officials are not able to do their job in the time alloted by the state constitution, it is state officials who should have to make concessions, not voters. Protect Arizonan’s rights by voting NO on Prop 112.
