Arizona Republic: “Voters should shoot down the highly flawed Prop. 109”

AZ ConstitutionArizona’s largest newspaper has joined the growing number of voices urging voters to reject Proposition 109 - which would enshrine hunting and fishing rights into the state constitution and bar the people from using their petition rights to make or change wildlife laws - this November.

In an editorial today the Arizona Republic points out what they see as two main flaws with the measure: it would subject state wildlife authorities to endless litigation and it would create a slippery slope of placing recreational rights into the constitution. The Sierra Vista Herald also came out against the legislature-referred ballot proposition also, pointing out that it is a power grab by the state legislature. Both papers are quick to point out that they do not oppose hunting and fishing rights: they simply recognize that it is bad policy.
