Steven R. Merican

Steven Merican is the principal of Steven R. Merican, P.C., an Illinois law firm specializing in the representation of parties appealing state and federal trial court decisions. Additionally, Steve serves as local counsel for attorneys with civil litigation pending in Illinois Circuit Courts or the U.S. District Court for the District of Northern Illinois. Steve’s long career as a litigator, entrepreneur, and writer, includes work both within large firms and as a solo practitioner.

In addition to his civil appeals practice and local counsel functions, Steve also is a principal in Trialology, LLC, a Chicago area jury consulting service that facilitates mock trials and jury focus groups to sharpen presentations and narrow the issues for high-stakes trials and appeals.

A board member of many civic and political organizations, Steve is an accomplished public speaker and media interviewee on public policy and legal issues. He is a frequent lecturer on legal topics to bar and trade associations, and a prominent legal author on appellate advocacy techniques.

Steve earned his J.D. from Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago-Kent College of Law, and holds his bachelor’s degree from Trenton State College. He is a member of the bar in the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, the Northern District of Illinois U.S. District Court, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court. He also is a member of the Illinois Appellate Lawyers Association.
